Rank SAAS website (non-wordpress)

Hi,

The SEO topics covered in class is based on wordpress, the recommended platform. However, can we still apply the same knowledge and strategies on a non-wordpress site? Reason being, we are developing a web application (SAAS) using client and server side scripting and hosting it on AWS.

Platform like wordpress and web hosting provider like Vodien may not be ideal as we require a much more advance platform/hosting provider for our SAAS site.

Kindly advice if we can apply the same or share what needs to be done specifically for this case.

Thanks.

SEO works on all type of platforms. It was one of the test questions. =)

Since the web application will not be a wordpress site, we may have to further customized the development to integrate blog functionality. However it may not be as easy operated as wordpress (ie create new post, insert content and hit POST).

As such, we are planning to do the below. Please advise if we can still rank for our site and is the below a good practice.

1) Retain the web application SAAS site as domain.com

2) Create a wordpress site and host it on a sub-domain – blog.domain.com

Thus technically, when users visit domain.com, they will view and access only the SAAS application directly. And when user visit the blog.domain.com, they will be able to view the blogs.

Of course, within each of the blog post on blog.domain.com, we will insert the relevant keywords and link it back to our MMP (domain.com).

Will the above still work? Can we still get our main site (domain.com) rank via the above method? Though it’s a 2 separate site address, technically both are sitting on the same parent domain thus was thinking it should still work fine.

Let me know your comments.

Thanks.

Did a search for the above and found the answer on the following blog + Matt Cutt’s advise. But still need your confirmation 🙂

I recommend domain.com/blog than blog.domain.com

alan.blogger.com is different from ralliart.blogger.com but it is still the same domain.

Hi Alan,

I shall take your advise to host the blog on domain.com/blog however I have some questions relating to the sitemap for this kind of site.

1st Question:

Since the wordpress will only be installed on the blog directory (ie main website not using wordpress at all), can the sitemap be setup as per below:

a) Root domain sitemap – (domain.com/sitemap.xml)
To create the sitemap manually.

b) Blog directory sitemap – (sitemap.com/blog/sitemap.xml)
Site map created through the WordPress plugin – Google XML sitemap

2nd Question:

With the above, I believe I will also have to submit 2x different sitemaps for the same website. Will search engine penalize site for having 2x different site map on different folder structure for the same domain? Or this is absolutely normal and would not cause for any alarm to search engine?

Appreciate your kind clarifications.

Thanks.

I prefer 1x XML sitemap for all posts but I have seen websites with 2x XML sitemap rank well too. Just make sure Google webmaster are crawling both sitemaps (domain.com/sitemap.xml and domain.com/blog/sitemap.xml)
